WHAT'S IN BLOOM - Tall Verbena

Verbena bonariensis, or Tall Verbena or Verbena on a Stick, has been blooming in several spots around the Arboretum for weeks now and will continue to bloom until frost.  If you plant nothing else in your garden to attract pollinators, this would be the one to plant.  Take a look at these pictures taken on a recent sunny day and see all the visitors this plant had.   To read more about the growing habits and care of this plant, click HERE.

PLANT SALE - Pitt County Arboretum

Saturday, May 19th

9:00-10:00 AM  Friends of the Arboretum Preview Sale
10:00 AM - NOON  Sale Open to All
11:00 AM Plant Swap

Here are pictures from last year's plant sale.  Again, we will have a great variety of plants for sale. The count has reached over 2,400!   The plants for sale were propagated from plants grown at the Arboretum or in the Master Gardeners' own gardens.  Some were started from seed and grown by the Master Gardeners.  All have shown success in their growing and are hence ready to be shared with you.  Many of the plants are ones that you just can't find at the local garden centers any more.  The sale is held RAIN OR SHINE!

PLANT SALE AT THE PITT COUNTY ARBORETUM

The Master Gardener Volunteers have been busy the past few months potting up and tending plants for their annual plant sale.  The tally of plants this year is over 2,100.  They will be selling perennials, annuals, vines, shrubs, trees, vegetables, herbs, and groundcovers.  Additionally, they will  be selling garden gloves.  There will also be a raffle with several baskets full of gardening related items for you to win.

A Plant Swap held separately from the sale is a chance for you and your neighbors to bring out items you would like to trade for someone else's garden excesses.  In the past, people have brought out plants, garden books, flower pots, garden tools, garden art, etc.  As a side note, if you do bring a plant try to have it's name and maybe a brief description on its care.

This is the major fundraiser for the Pitt County Arboretum.  All money collected is used to 'grow'  the Arboretum.

ROSES IN BLOOM IN PITT COUNTY

This is just a small sampling of the dozens of roses we have growing in our Rose Garden at the Arboretum.  If you love roses, you need to come out and see them now as they are all in full bloom.  If you thought you couldn't grow roses, these will prove you wrong.  Our Rose Garden was started in 2006 to demonstrate easy care roses.  These roses are pruned and fertilized in the spring and occasionally deadheaded (removing faded blooms), but they have never been sprayed.

Make sure you take time to stop and smell the roses, too.
Many of these are OH! so fragrant!
